I am usually open to portrait commissions. Due to the size of these portraits, they’re exceptionally difficult to ship, so I restrict my clients to those willing and able to cover my travel expenses or travel to Amsterdam themselves.
Since I work from photos, I will require a high-quality, decent-sized photograph focusing on the subject’s face. Whether this is a digital or hard-copy photo doesn’t matter. Ideally, I’ll take this photograph myself. In cases where I’m hindered by distance or other factors, I may turn down commissions if I feel I can’t work with the photo provided. I have previously turned down photographs that were too brightly lit, too blurry, too small, etc. A good photograph will not always make for a good drawing.
I offer portraits from A3 size up, in charcoal or coloured pastels. An A3-sized charcoal commission will generally cost around €300; this price will go up to €700 depending on size, material, and number of people in the portrait. (I’m uncomfortable with more than two people in the portrait.) While I accept pet portraits, they are pricier than human portraits.
I retain the full right to use (digital) copies of the portrait for personal or promotional use, unless specifically agreed upon otherwise. You buy the original and the right to make private copies to distribute amongst friends or family. For use online, I generally ask to be credited with a link to my website.
On rare occasions, I also do other types of commissions, usually digitally, similar to the self portrait found to the left or work found in the digital section of my portfolio. The cost will depend entirely on the complexity and size of the image.
